Sin - Part 4 - The Results of our sin (Millard J. Erickson)
The Immediate Results of Sin
In Genesis 3:8-19 we see the affects of sin on a few different levels. Sin leads to the alienation between:
- Mankind and God (v.8,23)
- Mankind and the creatures (v. 13, 21)
- Mankind and Creation (v.17-19)
- Husband and wife (v.12)
- Man and himself (v.19)
Sin as greater impacts that just on Adam and Eve. It has an impact on all of humanity. We call this: Original sin.
Original Sin
Original Sin, is the sin that all mankind has inherited from Adam. What leads us to believe in Original Sin, this tendency that we all have to sin?
- First, we see in our own lives that we cannot live a full day without sinning.
- Second, we see that everyone else also lives in this state.
- Third, this leads naturally to ask, why is this the case?
- in the Bible we read:
- Genesis 1:31 tells us that everything God created was Good,
- Genesis 8:21 tells us that we are evil from our youth.
- We must conclude that at the Fall, it was not just Adam and Eve who were effected man all humanity.
- Romans 3:23 Confirms this, that we all fall short of the glory of God.
- Romans 5:12-21 Tells us, why we all fall short. We all sinned in Adam.
Effects of Sin are transfers
Relationship with God
God hates wickedness (John 3;36, Pr 6:16-19)
We are guilty before him (Rom 3:23)
We deserve punishment (Rom 6:23)
We are separated from God. This is spiritual death - Is 59:2, Eph 2:1
Effects on the sinner
We are enslaved to sin (Rom 6:17)
Denial of sin (Gen 3:12 - Blame shifting)
Self-deceit (Jer 17:9, Mat 7:3)
Insensitivity - we are unresponsive even to our own consciences.
Self-centered.
Restlessness - Complete satisfaction never occurs. (How much money is enough? Just a little more!)
Effects on other humans
Competition
Inability to empathize (we only see our own perspective)
Rejection of authority
Inability to love others.
